There are around 800,000 People in the UK who have Dementia

The chance of developing dementia increases significantly with age one in fourteen people over 65 years of age, and one in six people over 80 have dementia, it is more common among women than men.

Over 17,000 younger people ( under 65) in the UK have dementia, This is called early on set Dementia.

Getting Dementia Diagnosed

Diagnosing dementia is often difficult, particularly in the early stages. To get a diagnosis the G.P is the first person that you should consult and if needed they will refer you on further to specialist Mental Health Team for specialist advise/support.

After receiving a diagnosis of Dementia most people wish to remain as independent as possible in their own homes for as long as possible. To achieve this, it may be necessary adapt their homes slightly or to use equipment and/or assistive technology.

Carer’s Assessments

Carer’s assessments are a way of identifying your needs as a carer, within the assessment your caring role, health, work, study/training,  and planning for the future are identified. This Assessment enables you to register on the emergency respite scheme which can provide support if you become ill.

Getting A Free Independent Assessment of Care Needs

The local authority have a legal duty to carry out a free assessment of care needs for anyone living in its area. A financial assessment will establish if any contribution towards any subsequent care will be needed.

Anyone can contact the local authority to raise the referral, but the person requiring an assessment must always be aware of the referral and agree to the assessment being carried out. To raise a referral Shropshire residents should contact 0345 6789044.
